and of course the sharing of the cake,

There was much fun and laughter at this wedding, a very happy Bride and Groom. And now as promised, here is the finished quilt from this Grandma.

Of course I took lots of photos and if you would like to see a few more, of the Groom's dinner, the family photos, (at least of the Bride's family) and the reception click here. I have been working on a few new Paintstik projects using the new stencils and the new colors of paint. I will post soon. But if you want to see what the new products are like just go to the Cedar Canyon blog. There is going to be a wedding in our family. One of my wonderful granddaughters just announced the news yesterday. Becky is a student at BYU, Provo and so is her husband to be. Travis is in his final year and Becky has 2 or so to finish. But they are young, in love and have decided that they want to be together forever, starting right now. Well not quite, but soon. The wedding has been set for Oct. 10, because they have a 3 day week-end and so does the father of the bride. The young couple was here to visit over the summer so Grandma and Grandpa were able to meet him and put their stamp of approval on this young man that will be taking charge of our granddaughter. We warned him, but he still wants to be her hubby so I guess that's all there is to it. Anyway, I stole a few photos from her facebook album so you could see the happy couple.

Okay, lots of hours spent this weekend watching the girls play in the MN State Girls Softball tournament. Monticello Magic ended with 4 wins 2 losses and placed 5th out of 32. Not too bad, and next Sunday they leave for Indiana to play in the Nationals. Go Magic. So anyway here are a few photos of my favorite player. The photo with the 3 girls are Nichole, my 1st base granddaughter and Danny and Mirah the 2 pitchers.

Well the noisy holiday is over, on my bicycle ride yesterday I found lots of places in the streets that were litered with the leftovers of firecrackers and fireworks. But the sky was sure pretty on Sat. night. DH wasn't home so it was quiet around here. I actually worked on clients quilts most of the weekend, but did do something fun. A friend gave me a copy of a new purse pattern, she knows I love to make bags of all shapes and sizes. This one is the "Mini Bow Tucks" bag by Penny Sturges for Quilts Illustrated. For me it is the perfect size, not too big and heavy, just right for all my stuff.

This second photo shows all the inside pockets, and there are 2 on the outside, so lots of places to put things. I love this fabric from Blank Fabric, if you remember I made a set of Bosa Nova gift bags from it too. I still have some left and have a vest pattern I hope to use it on. Anyway, I also made up a new purse pattern from Debbie Bowles of Maple Island Quilts, it's called "Wallet & Grommet" I added an outside pocket for my cell phone and 2 on the inside for stuff. I still have a few other new bag patterns to try out. I got 9 new ones at Spring Quilt Market.

Anyway, purses are fun to make, and they don't take as much time as making a big quilt. In my last post I mentioned quilting two quilts that were done by my daughter-in-law's mother, well they left for Montana before I took a photo. One of them you can see on Patchalotmore blog, the one for the Plumpkin (our mutual granddaughter) and hopefully when the binding is on Polly will take a photo of the other one when she presents it to her wonderful neighbor. Being President of Minnesota Quilters Inc. does take up a bit of time in my schedule, our annual show was a week ago and it was wonderful as usual. Lots of hard work but very fun and rewarding. The quilts were absolutely incredible, both in the judged and the non-judged and the special exhibits. There will be photos soon on the MQ web site. Here is one quilt I want to show you, it was pieced by Kathleen Winters, a fellow MQ Board member and I quilted it for her, we won a "Show Chair's" ribbon.
I have quilted for Kathleen before and her color choices are always amazing and this quilt was no exception, very dramatic.
I needed to come home a day early, so missed the last day of the show and all the work of take down, so sad (hee hee, really didn't miss the hard work) but it was important for me to be home. My DS and family came to visit from Montana and we were celebrating a very special graduation. My granddaughter Mary Amanda graduated, WITH HONORS, in just 3 years time. She skipped her junior year and still came out on top of her class. We are sooooooo proud of her. She will now go on to school at University of Montana, Missoula for a nursing degree. So anyway here is a photo of our sweet girl. There is another quilter blogger that shares some of my wonderful grandchildren and she sent a package to me a few weeks ago, it contained 2 quilts. One for a neighbor of my Montana family, she is a doctor and helped our grandson Jack when he was severely burn on his leg, and has also helped with many other "sick" days with Kathryn. As a thank you Polly wanted to give a quilt, so Grandma Marcie pieced and Grandma Mary quilted and Polly will add the binding. A great family thank you. The second quilt was for Kathryn, our youngest grandchild, who one day when she wasn't feeling well complained that the quilt on her bed really wasn't hers, she wanted one that her Grandma made just for her. So again Grandma Marcie pieced and Grandma Mary quilted and Mom will again add the binding. They are almost finished and I will put up photos soon. It is great having the family here even though I haven't seen much of them. They went to the lake for a few days but are expected back today for the rest of the week. Poor Chris had to return home for work but the rest of them are having a great time visiting old friends and family.

So much going on in the family and with my quilting world. I just got back from Spring Market in Pittsburg and saw so many beautiful fabrics and quilts and new toys and new patterns. It is always quilting overload. Cedar Canyon Textiles, whom I work with, introuduced 2 new items this market, a pattern for a whole cloth, painted, Coneflower and a new set of Holiday rubbing plates. Of course I made samples for the booth and I thought I would share them with you. The Coneflower was painted by a client and I did the quilting but I made up a little Holiday table runner using the new plates. Here are 2 of the blocks, if you go to the CCT web/blog you can see a little 9 patch. The other thing I did was using Laura Murray's Star Builder and some hand pieced Mariner's Compass blocks.
This quilt may go into Laura's new book, I am so excited about that. More to come on that subject.

Hey, can you believe it I finally have DS's quilt off the machine. This quilt was a long time in the process, I actually started it about 2 years ago to hang on a very large wall in their house. Oh well, now it will go on his bed. I think it is a very masculine looking quilt, just great for a guy, and it being a "Carpenter's Star" it fits the receipient well as he is a carpenter.

So this is quite a large quilt, about 93x105, I don't like square quilts so I added the 2 stripes top and bottom. I used up a lot of my stash, didn't buy one single new fabric, even had some flannel to use on the back. I will use up scraps for the binding so this will be one scrappy quilt. I really do like it and hope DS does too.

So then one day last week I went to a friends for a play day and we finished a project we planned a year or so ago. We each bought one of the "Laundry Basket Quilts" patterns, the Poinsettia and the Daffodils. Well here is my Daffodils, and my Poinsettia is still in the works. These are a lot of fun and go to gether pretty quickly, they are cut and paste, or fusible if you prefer. Now I have about 6 little wall hangings that I need to find time to quilt. Oh well, customers first. I have quite a few of those now so probably won't hear from me for a while. Have a Blessed Day.

Last week end I had company for dinner, thought I'd share a few photos of the cutest little people I know. They are Alexander (3 1/2), Aurora (1 1/2) and Gabriel (4 mo.) They are the children of Lizzy (granddaughter) and her hubby Andy.

Well I know I said I was going to show you the quilt I did for DS#3 but it is still on the machine. But I did do something so fun, I was in a 2 day class with Laura Wasilowski and what a hoot. She is so fun to take a class from. But anyway, here are photos of what I accomplished. She teaches fusing, using WonderUnder and it is great to be able to finish a project in a fairly short amount of time. They are art quilts so they are small.

Happy New Year everyone! Today is was very quiet around this house, DH is off in his big truck so no big party for us. So this is not to say I haven't been busy. On Sunday DH and I decided to redecorate our bathroom. After 7 years it was time, and we really changed it, much darker paint on the walls, no wallpaper, and new shower curtain, towels and rugs, the whole bit. When I finished putting it all together the walls looked really bare. Nothing I currently had matched, well I did find that a small collage done last Feb. fit in very well so that went up. Then the search for fabric and a pattern for more things. I actually found a number of fabrics that will work, but one in particular pleased me, it was a fat quarter I dyed a few years ago, it turned out an odd color so hadn't found a use, and guess what, it matched almost perfectly. So then, what to do with it, I take pictures at every quilt show I go to and also have a huge library of magazines and books. Well looking through some of the photos taken, I passed over a bunch my DS#4 took on a trip up to Glacier Nat'l Park. One he took of pebbles in water caught my eye, the colors were perfect, so it was printed out on Iron On Transfer, transferred onto white fabric, and low and behold, it came out just right. The print got trimmed, 1st border was dark brown to go with the other new things, and then I used the dyed fat quarter for a larger border. I am so pleased with the way it turned out, I named it "The Pebble Beach Pine" and you will see why in the photo. My next post will show you a scrap quilt I made for DS#3. The top is finished, the back needs piecing and it needs quilting, that is all for next week. Until then, have a Happy New Year, stay safe and have a Blessed Day.

Okay, it's been a long time, but there is so much to do at this time of year. I finally finished all my client's quilts and have been working feverishly on finishing some of my own. Boy is it ever fun to work on my own things. So here are some photos of what got finished. The first one is of my newly organized stash. Doesn't it look great, I'm not quite done, I had to order more of these neat little inventions from The Fabric Organizer.

They are the coolest idea in a long time. Anyway before I did this I quilted my Christmas Sparkler from Patchalot Patterns, the Merry Christmas wall hanging from Whimsicals, the SnowGlobes from Birch Creek Quilts (along with an addition of my own) and yesterday I finished fusing, but not quilted, O Christmas Tree from Quilt Poetry, and painted a sweatshirt using a stencil from The Crafter's Workshop. Following are the photos of each.

It was fun and quick, I used TaDa Triangles when I made mine. The fabrics were left overs from my Christmas Bosa Nova Gift Bags and out of my stash so it didn't cost a thing but time.

One of the fun thing with Marcie and I is that we share some grandchildren, I think I have mentioned this in the past but when you go look at her blog watch for photos of our loved ones. We both live very far away from them and miss them a lot.
Well Houston was interesting this year. Market was a little quieter than in the past, some of the vendor booths were smaller and there just didn't seem to be as many people in the hall. Talking to friends that were at Festival said it was also a bit quieter. I haven't heard numbers yet but I guess this economy is effecting quilters too. But I know a lot of my clients say if they can't afford to go out and do things they will still stay home and quilt, they just might start cleaning out the stash piles instead of shopping for new all the time. But lets keep up our spirits and keep our needles stitching. Have a Blessed Day.

Well life goes on and aren't we all too busy? Times just flies by and it seems not much gets done no matter how hard we try to finish all those projects. Especially when family comes first. DH and I spent most of last Saturday visiting our granddaughter and her newest addition, he really is a precious bundle of love. This week has been spent doing last minute quilts for clients and the final prep for market in Houston. I have to tell you, these little gift bags are so much fun to make, you just have to see what I did with some great fabric.

The green is a new Moda Christmas line and the great blue/purple print is a Blank, I am doing the whole set but the other two aren't finished yet. I am in the process of doing a black/gold set and it is sooooo rich looking. On the black set I am using a curvey blade in my rotary so that the seam allowance that shows will be wavey instead of straight. They will be great just as a gift for a friend or to put a gift into or to just sit around with "things" in them like a small storage box. They have Steam-A-Seam 2 between the fabrics so they are stiff enough to sit up nicely. The tall bag is perfect to hold a bottle of wine.
I thought I had photos of the quilts I finished this week but I can't seem to find them, oh well next time.
Last week our youngest granddaughter started pre-school and just loves it, she said she wanted to go to school to learn how to read. She was tired of having to have someone else read to her, she is 3 1/2 and she will probably be reading before the end of the year. She is amazing, here is the latest photo of her, her dad took this when they visited a hot springs near their new home.

Two of our older granddaughters just got their driving permits, watch out Monticello and Eau Claire. All of our students are getting great grades, our pharmacist-to-be is at the top of his class and working hard at staying there, he wants to be invited to the Honor Society and he'll make that goal I'm sure. Well enough for now, have a Blessed Day.

Yea!!!! it's a baby!!!! On Oct. 8, our granddaughter presented us with a beautiful new great grandson, Gabriel Michael was born at 7:59 a.m., weighing in at 7lb. 6oz, 20 3/4" long with quite a bit of hair. You can't see it cuz he has a hat on, but it is darker than his siblings, who are both blonds. All is well with both Mom and baby. As you can see he loves his new quilt. Big (?) sister and brother think he is pretty neat, at least so far.

Hello all, I know but I've been a busy little worker. So here are a couple things I've done, not much to show but I've been busy getting new booth table covers etc. ready for market. But Cedar Canyon is coming out with a neat pattern and I've made a couple trial runs and then with a new great grandbaby due next week I needed to do a quilt. Sorry about the sideways view of the quilt, I forgot to flip it in my album. It is so cute, I got the fabric in Missoula when we were out there moving DS and family. Now the pattern for the gift bag, it will be introduced at Fall Market so look for it in your local quilt shop later this year. The bags are shown on the back cover of Quilting Arts magazine, Oct. issue, and shops are already asking the distributors when the pattern is available. So I have also been quilting for clients so my days are full. I hope to write again soon, probably with photos of the new baby.

Hi all, I am preparing to teach a class and have made a new sample, and of course I needed to have it match our new car. This is such a fun bag, I have made 5 or 6 of them already, need to match outfits you know. Anyway, the pattern is from The Quilt Company, The 3 Pocket Tote, a painted it with Painstik paints and quilted it on my longarm. The arrow shaped design on the flap is just part of a new design/pattern by Laura Murray Designs called The StarBuilder. It is a really neat new way to make absolutely gorgeous stars. The bag takes just 3 fat quarters and less than 3 hours to make. You saw a few more of them in an earlier post.

Also in an earlier blog I told you about moving one of my sons and his family to Missoula, MT. Well it turns out that it takes fewer credits for a high schooler to graduate out there, 22 instead of the 30 it takes here. So my dear granddaughter found out she would be skipping her junior year and is now a senior. So one of the first things that needed to be done was senior photos, so here she is in all of her beauty. And I'm here to tell you she is just as wonderful on the inside as she is on the outside.

My DH and I are so blessed, we have 13 absolutely fabulous grandchildren, most of them live close by and this makes us very happy. It will be very different having one of the families so far away. One of our granddaughters is married and will present us with our 3rd Great Grandchild on Oct. 8. So needless to say, there is a new baby quilt in the process. I'll have photos soon.

Well must close for now, have a Blessed Day.

Well here is some fun stuff, DH and I just returned from car shopping with a new "toy". Oh what fun! I have been searching Craig's List and Car Soup and some others and we finally found just what we wanted. This is me sitting in the driveway. And as promised I am also adding some photos of a quilt I made to go with our new furniture. I had my painted floral one and it just wasn't the right colors. So this quilt was so fun, I started it on Tuesday morning had it pieced by that evening and had it quilted, bound and on the wall by Wed. night. It still needs to be blocked but I love it. The pattern is by Deb Madir of Birch Creek Quilts and is called Moon Dancers. But I didn't put on the "moons" And of course I had to do a little painting with Paintstiks and make it a little bigger to fit the space. Deb also sells iron on crystals. Check out her other patterns, they are lots of fun and easy to do. Well I'm going to go and drive my new toy for a while and then tomorrow we go to our niece's wedding. Pray for nice weather and have a Blessed Day.

Well I'm back from vacation and ready to work -NOT!!!! It is so hard to get back to this everyday grind. But we had a good time, even though it was sad and hard to leave part of the family so far away. We moved son #4 and his family to Missoula, MT so DS could attend pharmacy school out there. I have gotten so used to having all of my children and grandchildren close that it won't be easy having some 1200 miles away. I don't know how other women handle having all of their family far away. But it will also give us a wonderful place to visit. Missoula is a quirky little town of about 65,000 people, with another 40,000 or so in the "suburbs". It is a college town with a "hippie" feel. You can get from one side of town to the other in about 15 minutes if not in rush hour traffic. Everything is close, Polly says she didn't use a tank full of gas in the first week they were there. While we were there we went to Lolo Pass and Glacier Park, both beautiful places. Hello to all on a beautiful summer morning. I have been busy as I'm sure you all are. This weekend we went to visit DS in Wisconsin to watch more baseball and to visit the "new" house. DS and family seem to be settling in nicely, the grandkids have found lots of new friends in the neighborhood which is very nice as there were no children their ages in the old one. All my clients seem to have waited until after the MQ Show to call with their summer projects so there are lots of quilts on the "to do" racks in the studio. I finished one last week that was fun, the colors are super, it is going to be a table cloth. I tried something that one of the gals in my Longarm Guild brought for show and tell a while ago, with a busy pattern and fabric in the center but a plain boarder it worked great. I used a pantograph in the center and then did a free hand floral boarder, doubling all the stitching. What do you think? This week I am going to be working on quilts going to a client in Hilo, Hawaii. Needless to say her fabric choices are always so much fun. They have a quilt show there in July and she keeps trying to get me to come over for it, maybe someday. I hope to be able to work on some fun stuff of my own soon, maybe some handwork while we drive to Montana in a couple weeks. But for now it's off to the studio to work, have a Blessed Day.

What a busy weekend, and it is only half over. Thursday I had a little eyelid lift, it was to correct an error on an earlier surgury and now I'm suppose to "take it easy" for a few days. Well I quilted all day Friday, and EARLY Saturday, like 6:30 a.m. I left the house to go watch GD Nichole play in the State Fastpitch Tourney. What fun! Boo they lost their first game in a tie breaker, then went on the win their 2nd, 3rd and 4th games. So today they start again at 8:00 a.m. but I can't go to watch, but DH is going at least to the first game. They need to go on and win 4 today in order to come out on top. Here is a photo of the girls from an earlier game. They are in the 14and Under bracket and always do quite well. And in between games I went to my longarm guild meeting. We of course have show and tell just like every other quilting guild and sometimes I wonder why I am in this business. There is soooooo much talent in our group it is amazing. We have 2 or 3 national teachers in our group and many others that teach at the local level. A few of our ladies have books, patterns or cds out there for sale. Many of their quilting ideas can be used on your domestic machines as well as on the longarm machines out there. I will soon add their web links to the side bar over there so you can check them out. The next photo is just a sampling of what is available to our local people who want a longarm quilter to do their quilt. This was done free hand by a gal who teaches and designs pantograph patterns and is now working on some digitized patterns for the computer quilter.
Today I am going to a bridal shower for a niece so must dress up and act lady like instead of yelling my head off for our girls to play defense or to hit the ball hard. I made my son promise to call with updates all day long. Well must close for now, have a Blessed Day.

Hello everyone. Today I am going to show off a quilt I just finished for a customer, well she's my daughter-in-law too, and the daughter of one of my favorite pattern designers, Marcie Patch of Patchalot Patterns. The pattern is Chesapeake Star and I quilted the one that is on the front of the pattern too. Polly hasn't seen this yet as she is out visiting her Mom in Virginia so I thought I'd surprise her with a photo. The close up shows that I used an all over freehand feather in the center and also a feathered border. Polly, my son Chris and their family are moving to Missoula, Montana in August. She asked if it would be possible to get this finished before they moved so today it went on the machine and hooray, it's done. I have only had it for about 9 months. I am really going to miss all of them, it will be so hard not to be able to just pop over and visit, but Chris says the train goes out there pretty close to them and I can just hop on for a quick visit whenever I want.
On another note, I am finally getting my wind back after working so hard at the Minnesota Quilt Show. What fun, there were over 600 quilts on display with 223 of them being judged. I think our show is the one of the few large shows that has a non-judged exhibit and it is so wonderful to see so many quilters, men, women and children that want to display their quilts even if they don't want them judged. We also had over 100 vendors and national 21 teachers. Next year we are in Duluth, you should check it out it is worth the trip. This was definitely proven when we had 5 quilters from France come to the show this year and one of our scholarship applicants was from Malaysia. Just goes to show the power of the internet. I have some photos of a few quilts and the banquet on my photo album if you want to go look. Just click here . Soon there will be photos of all the prize winners on the MQ website. The link is on my list. Well enough for today, Keep Quilting and have a Blessed Day.

I really do remember how to do this, but life has been a little crazy around here getting ready for the MN quilt show. But tonight I am relaxing, my teachers are all here and teaching, students taking classes seem happy with their choices and the ribbons have been put on the quilts. There will soon be photos on the MQ web site of all the winners but I want to share one with you tonight. You might remember this quilt from an earlier blog, but thought I would crow a little, but not too much since the ribbon was awarded by the Mayor of Rochester and not the quilt judges. But hey, it is a ribbon and it is one of my favorites.
I promise I will be better at keeping my blog up to date as soon as I recover from this week. LOL to all

At lunch I learned DH and I will become Great Grandparents again next Oct. How exciting, baby will be little sister or brother to the one pictured last time. The weather here in MN was so awful this weekend I did nothing but paint and sew. I am now beading the bag with the yellow painted flap and finished a shopping bag pattern I got from Windham Fabric web site (The 5-6-7 Tote). Getting ready for the Minnesota Quilt show and for Spring Quilt Market in Portland plus many family things just keep getting in the way of the more fun stuff. I haven't had time to do too many quilting or even artsy things with doing things like color charts in Paintstik and also quilting for clients. But one of the little things I did was another of the 3 pocket bags using a rubbing plate and foiling. So I will show a few photos of my latest work, including some fun discharge work. I am having so much fun in my Journal class with Susan Stein.

We are making plans for Spring Market in Portland, OR in May. Shelly is the distributor of Shiva Paintstiks into the quilting world. She has a web site which is listed on the right and there is now a blog. I have added her to my "Stitching Sisters" list so please go check it out. She is a very creative lady, using her talents in the business world, the quilting world and in the fiber arts world. She (as the president and chief bottle washer of Cedar Canyon Textile) is one of the sponsors of the new and great public TV series from Quilting Arts. Above I said that Paintstiks are in the quilting world but they can be used in so many other ways too, you can use them on any porous surface, like walls, floors, leather and any other surface your creative mind can think of. So if you work with scrapbooking as well as quilting this may be something you might want to look into. I plan on being creative tomorrow, after my journal class last week I have so many more new ideas to play with. We did foiling and were told how to dye with rust which sounds like an interesting project to try. These two photos are of foiling, the first is my class trial, and the second is one I did at home. I used the foiling medium, brushing it on a rubbing plate, pressed it onto the fabric, let it dry and then added the foil. It was easy and fun. I hope the next one turns out a little clearer. In the class sample the top left was foil on glue from a glue gun, the top right was the foiling medium, the bottom left was wonder under applied and then foiled and the bottom right is Bo Nash 077 which is the consistence of salt but when ironed under a teflon sheet becomes an adhesive, then we foiled on top of it. Anyway it's lot of fun to try these new things. So until another time, have a Blessed Day.

Well it's been a few days, but it tourney time and we have been away watching our grandson play basketball. It was lots of fun, we stayed in a hotel with a pool and the grandkids and grandpa did lots of swimming. We didn't get much sleep with extra little people in our room but it was fun anyway. I thought I'd share photos of two of my recent projects. This first one I started during our retreat a few weeks ago. Norma Riehm gave a little tutorial on how to do a collage. I started with the yellow form in the lower left corner and then added the flower petals, ribbons and yarn and a little angelina, put organza over the top then quilted it. At that point I added some buttons and crystals and presto, it's done. It is only 8x10 but I'm happy with it for my first attempt. I think I might do some more, it was fun and quick. This next item is called "The 3 Pocket Bag" and was a free pattern from a shop in Brainerd, MN. It measures about 6" x 8 1/2" and went together in about 2 hours. It takes 3 fat quarters, you quilt 2 of them together with thin batting and use the 3rd for binding. Then it's like doing origami, you fold and sew, adding velcro and you end up with this great little bag. It has 3 pockets, see the one in the middle with the velcro, and then one on each side. I have now figured out how to add a little handle and even an inside cell phone pocket. It is perfect to put your money, credit card and things into then carry in your project bag to class. I used one of the decorative stitches on my sewing machine to do the quilting but you could do just straight stitches on the diagonal. If you then make a Lazy Girl Wonder Wallet you got it made. Have a Blessed Day.

Well I have been busy today, I made up a few of the Lazy Girl patterns, used a few Paintstiks and some torn paper and look, a matching set, Sassy Bag, Wonder Wallet and a Checkbook Cover. Joan's patterns are so fun and easy, I did all 3 pieces in less than a day. I also had a meeting with a fellow board member and we talked about strategic planning for MQ. I also promised pictures of my clients quilt, so I will add that here so you can see what I do on the days I am not blogging away. Ok this goofy thing doesn't want to let me add another photo. Not sure why but I guess it will have to wait. This evening I am going out to dinner with one of my sons and a granddaughter, the Rotary Club always has a fish fry this time of year and it is a tradition to go and eat fish. I can't believe it is daylight savings already on Sunday. It is also #2 sons birthday. I can't imagine him reading this so I guess it will just be a card in the mail. Hey I finally made it work. So here is her quilt, it is bright and scrappy. I have done many of this particular quilt, it is a favorite as it is easy and you can use up lots of fabric. One guild did it as a challenge and 4 of the ladies brought their quilts here, I did each one differently. It was fun and they loved it. They do one every year and then I get them and they all want them back in time for their retreat. I was over at Patchalotmore today and poor Marcie is fighting with squirrels and I can sympathize. I have some here that manage to get into my bird feeder even with a guard on the post. Well this is getting long so I will close for today. Have a Blessed Day.

But a friend just sent me an email and I thought the message was just too appropriate for us quilting ladies that I had to share it, so here it is.

Sunday after church, a Mom asked her very young daughter

what the lesson was about.

The daughter answered, "Don't be scared, you'll get your quilt."

Needless to say, the Mom was perplexed.

Later in the day, the pastor stopped by for tea and the Mom asked

him what that morning's Sunday school lesson was about.

He said "Be not afraid, thy comforter is coming."

I promise I will soon. My DH will not be home this weekend so maybe that will give me time to catch up. I am not sure why my type size changed, it says it it the same but it is obvious that it is not. Today I decided I would add a photo of Lake Superior, it was taken during a walk along the shore during our retreat last week. It was so beautiful up there, so relaxing to sew as we looked out upon the lake. Have a blessed day everyone.

It was so much fun and so very educational. The quilters that attended were women that came from varied backgrounds of experience and artistic ability. The sharing that went on over the 4 days was not surprising since I've never known quilters to be any other way. Quilters are generous with their time and talents, always ready to help and encourage another quilter whether beginner or experienced, a friend or a stranger. I took many photos and am willing to share and I told all the ladies at the retreat that I would put them on my blog so they are all fine with it. Although one said she felt her picture should be deleted, but oh well it was not a fashion retreat, we worked, we ate, we enjoyed, we ate, we talked, we walked and we slept and ate some more. I am going to put one photo here, when I got there I didn't feel like working on anything I brought along, our hostess also dyes fabric, Primrose Gradations, and of course had a wonderful selection at the house. I picked out some, borrowed a pattern from Lori and away I went. I got this far, it still needs an outer border, and I decided I am going to paint on it before I quilt it. I'll put up another photo when it is totally finished. Well must go take care of DH who just got home. Will right more later.

A Blessed Sunday Morning to you all! Today I am packing up to go on a retreat. There will 14 wonderful quilters at this retreat, some of whom you know. But I will let the photos next week show you. Anyway I am very excited and can't decide what to take along to work on. There are so many things I want to do, one of Marcie's patterns, some things out of Susan Stein's book, play with paint out of Sherrill Kahn's book, isn't this a great dilemma? But onto "old business" here is a photo of the 1st Sat. blocks and the fabric I picked for sashing and border. I think it will need another small strip of something darker before the 4 1/2" border. But you will get the idea. I know it's bright but it is still very scrappy. And then speaking of scrappy here is a photo of one of my favorite quilts. It is from "Log Cabin Fever" by Evelyn Sloppy. I just love her patterns and wish she taught classes. I contacted her a year ago to ask if she would teach at the Minnesota Quilters Show and Convention and she informed me that she is so involved with writing and designing she doesn't have time to teach. It is too bad, but then again her designs are so well planned in the books that they are easy to do. Anyway, this quilt was why I bought the book, but because I personally do not like a square quilt, I added the extra row of bear paws and made a pillow tuck. The log cabin is one of my favorite blocks, this is the 3rd quilt I finished using that block. One of the blogs I have visited recently has a couple quilts shown from Evelyn's other book, "40 Fabulous Quick Cut Quilts" now say that one fast 3 times. I can't remember this moment who, I'll check it out and let you know later. Then as promised, here are some photos of my space. Neither one is really terrible right this minute, and I am lucky that I finally spread out a bit. Everything used to be crammed into the room with my long arm and then I didn't have room to turn around. The 1st picture is what should be a closet in my studio room. Notice there are no doors. The second one is my book shelves with patterns and books, there is a second shelf going the other way at the corner with more. The little cubby shelves are ones my DH built for my fat quarters, he needs to make more. The sewing area is now out at the end of our family room. The stash wall looks a little bare right now, but if you remember, I just cleaned it out, giving a lot of fabric to guilds that make quilts for Quilts of Valor. Well I really need to get back to my packing, updates during the week I hope.

Ok, I have been tagged to say 7 things about me that are not widely known. That's hard for me cause I tell anybody anything they want to know. So here goes, first I am supposed to list the rules:
THE RULES:
1. Once you are tagged, link back to the person who tagged you.
2. Post THE RULES on your blog.
3. Post 7 weird or random facts about yourself on your blog.
4. Tag 7 people and link to them.
5. Comment on their blog to let them know they have been tagged.

So here are a few things about me:
1. I am a secret appliquer, (yea, how would you spell it?)
2. I really, really, really want an embroidery machine.
3. I have only been on 1 quilting retreat, and I have been quilting for 20 years
4. I am no good at curved piecing, can't ever make the ends meet
5. I like spinach
6. I want to sing opera, but I'm no good, can't quite reach those high notes, well the low one either
7. As much as I love quilting, I would rather be outside, so tell me, how can I move my sewing room to the back yard? and not get wet.

Now I am supposed to tag 7 other people, this is going to be hard. I am still at the stage where I am just exploring all the wonderful quilters I am finding skipping from blog to blog. I have left a note or two here and there and then as I go along, I check out other sites listed and pretty soon I can't get back to where I started. This whole blogging thing is so much fun, I am finding so many wonderful people. Well here are a few that have caught my eye.
1. Finn loves scraps and I really would like to do a rug out of scraps like she is doing.
2. Jen has some lovely quilts to show us.
3. Julaine does some fun things with a flair for Quilting Arts and Cloth, Paper Scissors
4. Shirley in New Zealand is a fiber artist, check it out and maybe do something "outside your box"
5. Frieda has been a teacher at our Minnesota Quilt show and is sooooo much fun. If you get a chance take a class from her
6. Jenclair enjoys many different hobbies, quilting being one of them, her spot is fun
7. Marcie and for those of you that came from one of the above blogs, my friend Marcie is the one that started this

My tastes run the gamut of styles of quilting, I love the traditional as well as the art quilts, I like to try different things outside of my comfort zone. But I have learned in my travels that no matter where I go, or how busy quilters are, they will always have time to stop and talk about quilts, fabric, techniques or just the weather. They are the friendliest most comforting people I have ever had the privilege of meeting and working with. I love you all.

Today I am working on putting together a quilt that is the result of a "1st Saturday" All the blocks were designed to use EZ Companion Angle and EZ Easy Angle rulers. The fabric choices were reproductions or batiks, and of course I chose batik. I love it when I can make a quilt for $5.00 plus sashing fabric. It is a fun and inexpensive way to get a big lap size. As we worked I always made 2 blocks from the pattern, one using the fabric the shop supplied and one out of my scrap pile, that way I have 24 blocks instead of just 12 and it still only cost $5.00. I have been noticing many of you that show photos of your messy work space, mine depends on whether I have just finished looking for the perfect fabric for something or if company is coming. Maybe later I'll take some photos and show off my mess. Because I was in charge of choosing the faculty for the MQ Quilt Show this year I had many teachers send/give me their books or patterns along with their class synopsis. One of the books I got was from Lois L. Hallock, "Creating Your Perfect Quilting Space". She has some wonderful suggestions on how to get your sewing space organized. She has a web site you should check out if you are a complete disaster area. On Wednesday I went to my first "Journal" class and we did silk fusion in class and our bonus was about discharge. So during the class Susan shows samples and explains all about one technique and then she demonstrates and explains a technique we then actually do in the class. For the first class she also showed many ways of putting the finished journal together. I really liked the idea of putting it together as a book, but it might end up as a wall hanging. I have 10 months to decide. I will post photos as I go along. Well company is coming so I should go clear a path. Have a blessed day.

The weather person says the temp will be up and down all week with a bit of snow. I am happy not to live in Utah where they have had record snowfall this year.
So my idea today is help for bloggers. Now you realize I am very new to this but someone commented that they wished they could see the wedding quilt up close. So, for those of you that don't know this yet, all you need to do is double left click on any photo and you get it to blow up to full screen. It is a wonderful way to get a close up look at the quilts or photos that bloggers put on their sites.
I was at Patchalotmore blog today and she talks about "thinking about quilting" How much time during the day, or night, do you spend thinking about a pattern, how to make it look better, how to make it a different size, what fabric to use? Yeah, lots of time, that's what being a quilter is about right? So, Happy Thinking!!

My granddaughter was brought home unexpectedly from college in Utah to have surgery on an injured foot. I was need to babysit a bit and haul people around and also needed to work a bit. Becky made it through her surgery just fine, a bit of pain for a day or two but after a few weeks of therapy she will be back in school.

I want you to know that I do spend a bit of time in the late evenings perusing blog sites and I finally have been leaving a few messages. There are so many out there and I enjoy them all.

I have not had a lot of time to do any piecing so I thought today I would share a quilt that I made to display at Spring Market last year (in Salt Lake City) and there were lots of wonderful comments. Most would look and then say something like "why is there an applique quilt in a booth about painting?" We would then inform them that it was painted with Paintstiks and most would then get up close and personal to check it out. The pattern was a BOM by Linda Yantis of Chandler, AZ. I sent photos to Linda and she was impressed. One of the other applique designers saw this and asked if I would do one of hers, it is a butterfly that I finished for Houston Market.

While looking for this photo I found another quilt that I want to share. This one is from Coffee Time Quilts by Cathy Wierzbicki. I fell in love with this pattern and went to my stash and started to pull fabric. I swear, I did not have to buy anything, I found the focus print first and then was happy to discover that I could pull all the rest together using stash fabric. I was so proud of myself. When I was at the point of having it up on the design wall to figure out what kind of border to use another granddaughter and her future husband came to visit and when they saw the quilt decided that was the one they wanted for a wedding present. Well what to do? Not much choice so this quilt was then finished up and given away. One of these days maybe I will make another one for me.

I love making big quilts but soon I will need to do more wall hangings as I am running out of room in my house for the big ones. But then again my kids and grandkids are always will to take them off my hands.

For some reason my computer isn't letting me do links from here so I will add Linda and Cathy to my favorite designers on the side so you can go and look at their other work. Enjoy. See you soon.

Well we have been home a few days now and I want to go back, it's too cold here. It was unseasonably cool in Mexico while we were there but it was 70 degrees warmer than here. We had a wonderful trip, while we were in Mazatlan our friends took us to some of the "other" places that tourists don't usually go to. One of the places was a fabric store. It reminded me a lot of an old JoAnn's Fabric store. Mostly inexpensive stuff, not quality quilting fabric that's for sure. I don't know if there is such a place, my friend hasn't found one in the 6 years they have been going there. A few years ago when we went to the Caribbean, on Grenada, I found a wonderful shop for batik fabric.

We went whale watching in Cabo San Lucas and it was wonderful, we had 4 humpback whales playing around our boat for about an hour. It was fascinating and very beautiful to watch. I couldn't take pictures fast enough to always catch what I wanted but here is my favorite.

Today I had to get back to reality and started quilting a clients top. I am waiting for some patterns from Patchalot Patterns so that I can do some piecing. I have to do a quilt for a wedding gift for August and I figure if I start now I might get it finished in time. I had my sewing machine in for it's yearly cleaning and adjusting while I was gone so it should be raring to go.

I have spent the last couple evenings out wandering around other blog sites, it is so much fun, I am finding so many sites where I want to go back and visit. I will start leaving messages so hopefully some of the authors will come and visit with me. By for now and have a blessed day.

This supposed to be the coldest week in many years in MN and we are heading for a cruise along the Mexican Riviera. No quilting being done this week, well maybe some hand work on my Mariner's Compass while I sit by the pool sunning. Being a machine piecer and a machine quilter it is very unusual for me to do hand work. I took a class from Cindy Blackberg last June and am now hand piecing a MC after using her "stamps" to mark the fabric. It is a very easy way to prepare your fabric for some really neat quilts. Check out her web site. She does lots of scrappy quilts. If she can recruit me a solid machine person, you know her methods have to be easy.
Well must say good-bye, DH is calling that the car is loaded. I'll be back in a week with photos to share.

Well it is a quiet Sunday afternoon and I'm busy getting ready to pack. My hubby and I are going on a cruise to the Mexican Riviera next Friday. I decided that I needed a little bag for formal night, so I whipped up a cute little Lazy Girl bag. Lazy Girl patterns are so fun and quick. I should really be quilting some client's quilt but today just seems to be a "get ready for trip" day. So I also made a pair of "Island Pants", they just wrap around and tie and are great when it's hot. Lugged the suitcases upstairs and started to lay out the summer clothes that will go with us.

Yesterday and Friday were busy "work" type days, looking for new pop up displays for market, new furniture for the soon to be new office for Cedar Canyon Textiles, and a guild meeting for my longarm quilters group. For "Show and Tell" Sandi Irish and I brought along the quilt we collaborated on for the Minnesota Quilters Show and Conference, it will be the raffle quilt. Sandi designed and constructed the quilt and I quilted it. This photo is of Sandi showing off the quilt. I'm hiding behind it holding up the other corner. We have a great group of quilters, that not only quilt for a business but we all are piecers too. We also have members that win top prizes at the shows, we have national teachers and a couple of our members write for some of the quilting magazines and some are pattern designers and longarm pattern designers, both for pantographs and for digitized quilting.

This week will be busy again, but hopefully that will help make the time go faster. Our grandson is finally home and is now out of the Navy. He called yesterday and he'll come out to see his grandma sometime this week. Probably not until after his fiance' goes back to college. Our weather has been fairly mild the last couple weeks but it is suppose to get real cold now by Thursday. Just in time for us to be off to warmer climates. Yea!!!

I have been out wandering around in blog land and have found so many fun blogs. Haven't had time to leave messages yet but plan to do so soon. So watch for me and please leave a note to say Hi.

Well tomorrow is back to the normal routine of things, the holiday season is at an end, the Christmas decorations came down today and are packed for another year. Sounds kind of sad, but there is hope soon, we leave for our vacation on the 19th. We are taking a cruise to the Mexican Riviera for a week. The weather there is in the 80s as opposed to 20s here in Minnesota. Can't wait to lay in the sun and cook for a few days. We are doing a "whale watching" excursion and are really looking forward to that. We will also spend a day with friends that winter in Mazatlan so that will be great too.

So what am I going to do for my quilting this year, thinking "outside the box" I am going to try some new things, like foiling, silk fusion, different stamping, I am going to take a journaling class from Susan Stein that will teach all of these things and more. I have so many large bed quilts I am not sure what I would do with another one, (my kids say give it to them, not!) so I am going to do some wall hangings with a little more "artsy" flair to them. Susan has a new book, Fabric Art Workbook that shows a lot of fun ways to embellish your quilts.

Yesterday I finished a project that I started in a class last June, Piping Hot Curves with Susan Cleveland. I tried her piping in the binding a few years ago so know how to make the piping, but using it for curves was fun. I call this Chinese Noodles, I used an oriental fabric as my focus and picked up the black, gold and orange from the print. It needs to be quilted yet and will then get more piping, in the binding. I think now I will go play with my Paintstiks. Have a great Day.

Happy New Year

Happy New Year to All, I am so new to this blogging that I had to have a lesson today in how to add a link so you can see where I got my inspiration or patterns for the projects in my posts. I will attempt to add them here. The "Granduation Gift" quilt is from Marcie Patch at Patchalot Patterns
The Summer Tote is from Lazy Girl, and Joan has a blog on her site too. Lots of fun and very informative.
The "Meowy Christmas" cat is from Cabin Fever by Whimsicals, Teri Degankalb (?spelling).
The "Snow Globe" is from Birch Creek Quilts by Deb Madir. She is also a dealer for Swarovski Crystals.
The "Christmas Tree" quilt is a pattern from Ricky Tims, I am not sure it is still available but you can check his site.
The little piece of the diamond quilt is from our state guild raffle quilt. To check out our show and have a look at the whole quilt you need to go to Minnesota Quilters Inc. and click on the 2008 show link. I hope I haven't forgotten anything and if I did, please let me know and I will try to fill in any blanks. Have a Blessed Day, Mary

Well our trip is getting closer, and you know, I just had to have a fun new tote to use. One that looked like warm weather and sunshine. It is snowing here today, it looks like a snow globe, big, soft, fat flakes. Anyway I just finished my new tote, it is a LazyGirl bag (Summer Tote) made with fabric from Sew Batik and Bold Over Batiks, and out of the scraps I made a little Wonder Wallet. The bag is great, lots of room and pockets inside and out with a zipper closure. I know I have work waiting but this is so much more fun.

Well my hubby didn't make it home this weekend so I'm doing some projects for me, not customers. Although I have plenty of work in the studio to do. But here are a couple things I just finished, not quilted yet, but ready for the machine. The one is a project out of a book called "Cabin Fever" from Whimsicals (Terri D). It is supposed to be done with felt, fused and then just framed. I chose to paint it with my Paintstiks and make a frame from fabric. It will be a late Christmas gift to Shelly. In the book the cat is brown, but Shelly's cat is white with orange markings. The "Snow Globe" is a pattern by Deb Madir of Birch Creek Quilts. It is a fusible, very quick and fun. It needs quilting and then all the glitter and glitz. Deb sells iron on crystals. I also decided to add a second globe under the first, only instead of a mailbox and bird I'm going to add a snowman. And then I'll border it together. I am also working on some clothes, yuk, but need somethings to wear when we go on our cruise in 3 weeks. Can't stand paying the prices in stores.

Well all the celebrating is over, I feel like all we did for 3 days was eat. But the food and company was wonderful. On Sunday we were with our children, grand children and the 2 little great grand children. Our family keeps growing, there are now 29 of us. Monday was quiet, spent with one son and his family, and Christmas Day we spent with Roger's family, 22 of 27 were present. Lots of laughter on all 3 days. The photo on the left is some of the table on Christmas Day. The one on the right is some of the family unwrapping presents on Sunday. It is such a wonderful time of year to have lots of family.

Well today it was back to work. My family laughs when I say that, I'm supposed to be retired, but there is not many quiet moments around this house. I am diligently working at my job as Faculty Co-chair for the Minnesota Quilter's Show and Conference. Next week is our "preview" meeting where we showcase the teachers and their classes that are being offered. Check our the web site - www.mnquilt.org then click on the 2008 show link. If there is anyway you can make it to MN in June it is well worth the trip. I'll attach a "little" bit of the raffle quilt, I just finished quilting it. The designer is Sandi Irish of Irish Chain Patterns, she used Timeless Treasures Batiks, and I used all Superior Threads. It really turned out stunning.

I want to first wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Then I want to share this photo with you from Tori's graduation. There were lots of happy tears, can you tell the family is very proud of her? Our family will be together on Sunday, there are 29 of us, minus 3. Our oldest grandson is in the Navy, he's in Japan and won't be home until shortly after the first of the year, one granddaughter is in college in Utah and will be home late Sunday evening as will Tony's Jenny, who works in DC. The house will be full, and so will our stomachs from what I hear about the food being served.

This new photo is of a quilt I did from a pattern by Ricky Tims. I know this does not look like something Ricky would design but it is and I just fell in love with it. He made a gift of the pattern to me 2 years ago at the International Quilt Market in Houston. We were both there working, but we always manage to find time to visit others we know and do a little shopping.
Anyway, this is the only "tree" we put up this year, we are spending Christmas Eve and Christmas Day with other members of our families so we only put up some of our decorations. This little photo is a close up of the quilting and the crystals I put on the quilt.

Hello and Merry Christmas. I have added a photo of my youngest granddaughter, all ready to attend church yesterday. She looks like such an angel, but believe me there is a little devil in her eye too. I am so lucky that most of my 13 grandchildren and my 2 great grandchildren live close by. At this time of year it is so fun to watch them learn about Christmas.

We are all so proud of her accomplishments, she is at the top of her class and is graduating with honors. Tori has worked very hard the last 4 years, and her family has too. She couldn't have done it without their support and cooperation. She is married to my son John and they have 3 very active children, Alison (14), Aaron (11) and Maggie (8). I choose this quilt, pattern and fabrics, because Tori likes the "country" look in her home. The pattern is from a collection of patterns offered by Marcie Patch at www.patchalotpatterns.com. Marcie is very special to me as she is the mother of one of my other daughters-in-law. Check out her web site and blog, you will see a photo of the cutest little girl, that is the youngest of my 13 grandchildren.

As I learn how to do this I will add photos of my family and some of my quilts. I'll let you know how I keep busy while I am suppose to be retired. I haven't really figured out this retirement thing, I'm busier now than ever. I have a few friends that have blogs and many of my grandchildren do, as well as "my space" places where they share information. It is really amazing how we communicate today. Well time to go figure out the rest of this process. Have a wonderful, blessed day
